NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK (NBN):
IS YOUR STRATA UP TO SPEED?
Media Release - 16 FEBRUARY 2012
Coffs Harbour is one of the first sites in the country set to enjoy the benefits of the ‘superfast’ internet speeds delivered by a new National Broadband Network (NBN). About 3,000 Coffs Coast residents will have the fibre optics cables connected to their homes and businesses by NBN Co in the next year.
NBN Co will need to obtain consent from your Executive Committee and/or Strata Manager in order to carry out the wiring modifications in your building, but work will be contained in common areas.
The Strata Management Group encourages Executive Committees to convene an executive committee or general meeting when they first receive notice of the rollout in their area. Speedier consent will mean works are completed on schedule and at a potential lower ‘early adoption’ cost, perhaps putting your Strata ‘streets ahead.’
In October 2010 NBN Co committed to covering the costs of rewiring old apartment blocks to ensure they can connect to the service.
Lot owners who already have a network connection device inside their lot can simply call their internet service provider (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone etc) to activate their device when the fibre cabling is completed and get instant access.
Your Strata Manager will be able to help you with the legislative requirements around this exciting technological change.
If consent to NBN is delayed and your strata community later changes its mind after the street is completed, you will have to cover the costs for the work to be done.
Once fibre cabling is finalised for the whole area, all services delivered on the old copper system will be cut off.
A building without internal fibre cabling will have to get a wireless service themselves.
Lot owners/tenants who do not have a network connecting device need to contact their service provider to have this physically installed, as this is will not be NBN Co's responsibility.
