PREPARE FOR STORM SEASON

Media Release - 6 December 2011

The North Coast storm season is here and SMS Strata Management Group want to make sure people living in strata titled properties are prepared.

“Those living in apartments can be complacent about preparation for storms, both in a insurance sense and in terms of potential flying debris and other damage,” said Colin Dennis, CEO of SMS Strata Management Group.

“Unlike living in stand-alone home, these residents tend to trust that that the Body Corporate has looked after all that needs to be done -  and sometimes this is not the case.

“Preparing for a storm means protecting your property from damage and also preparing to respond when damage occurs, is there a safe and pre-arranged meeting place in your building? Is there emergency lighting?

“Everyone needs contents insurance, if a window shatters and, as a tennant, your furniture is soaked in the rain, it will be a bleak Christmas.

“We suggest dead palm tree leaves are removed from the pool area, that gutters are cleared by a professional, so that water can get away quickly, that branches are trimmed, and all fencing is secure.

“When a storm is on its way, make sure outdoor furniture and any other items are moved indoors off balconies.

“Check with your Executive Committee or your Strata Manager that your property has adequate insurance, its always best to be sure,” he said.

SMS Strata Management Group now manages more than 1000 buildings and representing 10,000 owners between the Byron Bay/Ballina and Coffs Harbour offices, making this a significant business growth story on the NSW Far North Coast with 18 staff between two offices.
